Cabane du Combal is located at the end of Lac Combal and is a popular stop between Courmayeur and Les Chapieux. This section of the TMB has limited accommodation availability, with Rifugio Elisabetta being the main alternative to Cabane du Combal.
Cabane du Combal is a top rifugio for many hikers as it is a small rifugio with only 23 beds that are spread out in small rooms of 3 – 4 beds, all of which have access to their own toilet and shower facilities. However, this small size also makes securing a booking at Cabane du Combal very competative with most beds booked for the season in the fall.
Bookings are made on the Au Tour du Mont Blanc website and typically open in early-October for the following summer.

Cabane du Combal Experience

Approaching Cabane du Combal, you are greeted by the sight of a cabin nestled at the base of the mountains, with a serene blue lake adding to its charming allure. Upon arrival, visitors were warmly welcomed by the staff who assisted them with the check-in process, which included a quick passport verification. The process was a breeze, and the staff exhibited a friendly vibe throughout.
Guests checking in were directed to stow away their boots in designated cubbies and their backpacks in provided bins. Baskets were handed out for guests to carry essentials to their cozy rooms for the night. The guest rooms, located on the second floor, boasted multiple beds, and each room came equipped with a private bathroom featuring a toilet and shower. Multiple charging stations were available in each room, conveniently located for guests to share.
At 9:00 PM, electricity was shut off until the following morning, so it was important to charge devices prior to that. There was no wifi, but there was spotty cell service for those who may have needed to make contact with the outside world.
The showers, while not spa-like, were invigorating and provided a refreshing cleanse. Hot water was only available after 4:00 PM until dinner, so guests were encouraged to use that window to their advantage. After freshening up, guests could make the most of the generous outdoor space, complete with picnic tables lining the refuge’s side and larger ones out front. To add to the fun, outdoor games like cornhole and some board games were available for everyone’s enjoyment.
One standout experience for many was the hot chocolate – a genuine treat with no powdered mixes in sight! It was a joy to sip it outside, basking in the beautiful weather and mingling with fellow guests (before a quick siesta prior dinner).
Dinner was a true delight at this refuge. The evening began with a simple yet delicious serving of penne tossed in a fresh homemade tomato sauce, with seconds and thirds readily offered— before the revelation that it was just the appetizer. The main course featured a delectable combination of squash, zucchini, and sausage swimming in a flavorful tomato sauce, accompanied by generous helpings of mashed potatoes. And, of course, there was bread to share. To cap off the meal, a luscious crème brûlée left everyone content and full as they retired to their beds.
A hearty breakfast spread awaited guests at 7:00 AM, featuring an array of bread, jams, cheese, cereals, yogurts, and boiled eggs for those seeking a more substantial start to the day. Coffee flowed freely, and juice was on hand for the taking. As everyone geared up for the day’s adventure, they were greeted by a radiant sunny morning.
Our stay at Cabane du Combal was nothing short of wonderful. The staff were not only kind and helpful, but also a lot of fun to be around. The food was delicious and the facilities were well-maintained. This refuge rightfully earned its spot as one of our favorites!
